A new scoping study to develop UK guidelines for the implementation of a Water Sensitive Urban Design (WSUD) approach to water management is underway.
CIRIA, Arup and AECOM are working in partnership on the project, which will draw on international expertise to create a holistic approach to water management, breaking down the current silos of practice.
The guidelines will be informed by a series of workshops being held throughout the UK, an online survey and a review of case studies. These will enable the team to engage with the wide range of disciplines required for WSUD to become a reality in the UK.
WSUD involves the integration of water management into urban design and planning. It considers how urban form – both landscapes and buildings – can be designed to capture, treat, store and re-supply water locally to minimise pollution impacts downstream, and to make urban areas more resilient.
Changes in legislation, combined with economic pressures and the need to embrace climate change adaptation, are offering the opportunity to demonstrate how WSUD can improve both the natural and built environment.
The team is currently looking for companies and individuals to complete the online survey and submit case studies. The findings of the scoping study will be published in the autumn and will include presentation material.
