Hydropower firm applies for third water abstraction licence in two months

Hydrosense Renewables Ltd has made its third application in two months to the Environment Agency for a full licence to abstract water for hydroelectric power generation at a number of locations in England.

The latest application is for a full licence to abstract water from the River Avon at Nafford Weir as follows:

  • 28,800 cubic metres an hour
  • 691,200 cubic metres a day
  • 252,288,000 cubic metres a year

The water will be used for hydroelectric power generation.

The scheme includes a fish pass next to the proposed Archimedes screw turbine and the provision of eel passage on the existing weir. All abstracted water will be passed around the existing sluices and is to be returned to the river roughly 30 metres downstream of the point of abstraction.

The company also applied to the Agency in August for a full licence to abstract water for hydro-electric power generation from the River Weaver at Mill Forge, Church Minshull, alongside a licence to obstruct or impede the flow of the River Weaver, between 1 January and 31 December inclusive in each year as follows:

  • 19,944 cubic metres an hour
  • 478,656 cubic metres a day
  • 128,758,464 cubic metres a year

In July Hydrosense Renewables Ltd separately applied for a licence to abstract water for hydropower from the River Derwent at Kirkham at the following rates and periods:

  • 7,000 litres per second
  • 25,200 cubic metres an hour
  • 604,800 cubic metres a day
  • 199,584,000 cubic metres a year

The proposal includes an Archimedes screw turbine and a Larinier fish pass both located in a new channel - arrangements for eel and lamprey passage at the site are also included. The abstracted water will be returned to the river approximately 110 metres downstream of the new channel intake.
