Anglian Water seeks market input on proposals for biomethane upgrades at its Sludge Treatment Centres

Anglian Water is seeking market input on biomethane upgrading proposals – the water company has issued a Periodic Indicative Notice inviting interested suppliers to submit Expressions of Interest.

ANGLIAN WATER LOVE EVERY DROP BANNER

Anglian Water produces over 150,000 dry tonnes of raw wastewater derived sludge per annum which is treated at 10 regional sludge treatment centres (STC) using advanced anaerobic digestion technologies.

The biogas produced by this process is currently used as a renewable fuel in combined heat & power (CHP) engines.

To support its net zero 2030 plans the utility is proposing to transition its CHP fleet over to biogas upgrading to biomethane for grid injection or other beneficial use.

Anglian’s base plan is to switch the following three priority sites to biomethane:

  • Cottonvalley STC (Milton Keynes)
  • Gt Billing STC (Northampton)
  • Whitlingham STC (Norwich)

The water company said it would also consider the option to accelerate its transition across its other STC sites as follows:

  • Basildon STC
  • Chelmsford STC
  • Cliff Quay STC (Ipswich)
  • Colchester STC
  • King's Lynn STC
  • Pyewipe STC (Grimsby)

In addition, Anglian Water is currently progressing plans to build a new STC for Cambridge as part of its Cambridge Water Recycling Centre relocation project. The proposed solution for the new STC also includes plans for biomethane upgrading to grid.

The water company is interested in the provision of an end to end service for the upgrading of raw biogas to biomethane including the full engineering, procurement and construction of:

  • Gas clean-up
  • Biomethane upgrading equipment
  • Grid injection or compression equipment where option is transfer to a remote receiving station or alternate use (e.g use as a Bio-CNG fuel)
  • Pipeline & connection to grid
  • Possible CO2 capture and recovery
  • Possible wider renewable energy integration, e.g. heat pumps for process heating, solar etc to maximise renewable energy benefits from STC operations

Anglian Water said it remains open at this stage to commercial models from traditional design, build (AWS operate) through to design, build, operate and design, build, finance, operate models. The water company expects to issue a formal contract notice at the start of June 2024.

The utility has emphasised that in support of its net zero strategy, the carbon benefits associated with the biomethane produced would be fully retained by Anglian Water.

Anglian Water is now inviting interested suppliers with relevant experience to get in touch and provide their details, including their core skills in relation to the services outlined in the notice and services offered, together with example projects and services.

Suppliers who respond to the PIN notice will then be sent a Short Net Zero 2030 - Biomethane Upgrading Bidder Assessment Form pre-qualification form.

Time limit for receipt of expressions of interest is 30 April 2023 – click here to access the PIN notice documentation.
