Water UK reports on the current state of our water levels...
Water resources are responding well to the above average- rainfall although regional variations mean that some aquifers still have not yet fully recovered.
Rainfall in the South East in the first half of winter has been greater than that received in the entire winter from October 2004 to March 2005 – the start of the drought.
Consequently the water resources outlook is much better than in the past two years.
Given continuing average rainfall water companies are optimistic that restrictions will not be needed during 2007. However, if the weather changes and the rest of the winter is dry, there could still be problems.
All water companies promote wise use of water and will continue with high profile information campaigns as we approach the spring planting season.
In summer 2006 customers showed that they understood the impact of two dry winters on water supply from surface and groundwater sources by responding positively to requests to conserve water.
Recognising this goodwill and the importance of helping consumers to avoid wasting water, companies are backing many different initiatives in their own areas.
2006 was the hottest year on record in Britain since records began and the Met Office says that 2007 is likely to be the hottest globally.
