Green light for major Indian water grid project

K Chandrasekhar Rao, Chief Minister of Telangana state in India, has announced details of an ambitious water grid project for the state to provide a drinking water supply to all households.

The entire water grid would be divided into 26 segments and 29 intake wells, together with 56 water treatment plants and substations.

Once finished, the water grid would link all rural areas, municipalities and corporations in the state.

According to preliminary plans, the government is planning to provide 100 litres of treated water per person per day in rural areas and 135 litres in municipalities and 150 litres in municipal corporation limits across the state. Blanket permission will be given for laying pipelines and electricity lines on government land.

Work on the 29 'intake wells' will start next month.
