New tidal lagoon project planned at Cardiff

The Planning Inspectorate has been notified that the developers of the Tidal Lagoon Swansea project intend to make a new application for a new tidal lagoon at Cardiff.

Tidal Lagoon Power’s intention is to develop a fleet of 5 full-scale tidal lagoons that, together with the flagship Swansea Bay project, could provide 8% of the UK’s electricity.

A site at Cardiff is currently being examined in further detail and now that an initial meeting has been held with the Planning Inspectorate, features on the National Infrastructure Planning Portal.

The project is pre-application and the developer’s focus is currently on environmental and engineering feasibility and local community opinion.  Further details on this and other projects will become available later in the year.

The application is expected to be submitted to the Planning Inspectorate Q2 2017. After receipt of the application, there will be 28 days to review the application and decide whether or not to accept it.

The Swansea Bay project application was submitted in Feb 2014, and the public examination ran from June to December 2014, with a decision due by 10 June 2015 at the latest.

The proposed scheme itself consists of the construction of a tidal lagoon electricity generating station with a potential generating capacity of 1800MW up to a possible 2800 MW.

The initial planning examination closed on 10 December 2014. A number of representations from Natural Resources Wales were accepted by the Examining Authority after the last deadline and these have been published. The documents were received late due to a technical issue relating to the size of the email.
