Dale Foster: Globally, many customers are familiar with well-established HUBER Solar, Belt and Disc sludge drying equipment that are in wide spread These are particularly well suited for medium-large wastewater treatment plants with very large throughputs achievable.
While traditional HUBER Belt Dryers BT and RotaDry® Disc Dryers target medium-large facilities with the required temperature of a suitable heat source available, the HUBER Cold Air Dryer HPS® is designed specifically for plants up to 50,000 population equivalents (PE) and is designed to deal with up to 3,000 tonnes of dewatered sludge annually. Smaller modules are available for lower throughputs.
Many wastewater treatment plants are investing in photovoltaic systems, wind power, digester gas CHP units and battery storage to make their energy supply more sustainable and economical. At the same time, an increasingly important question arises – How can self-generated electricity be utilised effectively once the plant's electricity demand has been met and available storage capacity has been fully utilised?
The HUBER Cold Air Dryer HPS® can help transform surplus renewable electricity into a tangible economic benefit for wastewater treatment plant operators. Instead of exporting electricity to the public grid for little return, the available energy can be utilised for an essential operational task – Sludge Drying.
The HUBER Cold Air Dryer HPS® pairs effectively with local photovoltaic (solar) systems, allowing smaller facilities to use surplus clean electricity to reach climate-neutral operation. Depending on the amount of water evaporation required, between one and five drying modules can be used. By using these specially designed containerised modules, the customer receives a cost-effective machine with the usual HUBER high quality, performance and reliability customers expect.
Delivered as a modular, factory-tested turnkey system inside a specially designed container, it removes the significant site installation and exhaust air treatment requirements of larger systems. HPS® solutions are also available where the dryer can be installed within an available building rather than in a container.
We’re already seeing a lot of interest in this latest addition to HUBER’s range of sludge treatment technologies which have been used by UK and Irish water companies for decades.
In contrast, the Cold Air Dryer HPS® is a versatile option for water companies with smaller sites, hard to access sites during peak population periods, which may often be scattered over a wide area where they are faced with the necessity for frequent tankering of thin or dewatered sludge away to larger regional centres for treatment.
The optimum system design is always site-specific. Key factors include the actual power generation profile, the plant load profile, the available storage capacity, the sludge quantity, the dry solids content and the desired drying target.
The HUBER Cold Air Dryer HPS® enables the beneficial use of temporarily available surplus electricity for sewage sludge drying and combines energy management and sludge management into one integrated concept.
