Quarry company fined £12,500 for water pollution offence

A Co Tyrone Company has been fined £12,500 at Omagh Magistrates’ Court  for a water pollution offence.

On 14 January magistrates fined McAnenly Quarries Ltd, of Spring Road, Drumnakilly, Carrickmore, Co Tyrone fined for making a polluting discharge to a waterway. Following a report of pollution on 30 January 2009, a Water Quality Inspector, acting on behalf of the Northern Ireland Environment Agency, inspected the Drumnakilly River and observed a sandy plume upstream of Drumnakilly Bridge where the waterway was discoloured and silty.

The source of the polluting discharge was traced to a quarry at Spring Road, Drumnakilly, owned by McAnenly Quarries Ltd. A sample taken at the time of the incident confirmed that the discharge contained poisonous, noxious or polluting matter which was potentially harmful to fish life in the receiving waterway.
