Construction work starts on £36m Essex coast protection scheme

Construction work has started on the £36 million Clacton and Holland-on-Sea coast protection scheme in Essex.

Designed by Mott MacDonald, the project will cover a 5km stretch from Clacton Pier to Holland Haven, protecting over 3,000 homes and businesses for the next 100 years.

Mott MacDonald is now delivering project management, site supervision and construction design and management co-ordination services on the project, which includes 22 rock fishtail groyne structures, a terminal groyne and nearly 950,000 cubic metres of sand and shingle beach recharge.

The consultancy has been working with Tendring District Council, Essex County Council and the Environment Agency to deliver the detailed design and project appraisal report. This has included numerical modelling for wave conditions and sediment movement, gaining planning consent and Marine Licence, stakeholder engagement, environmental assessments, ground investigation procurement and supervision and obtaining third-party funding.

Peter Phipps, Mott MacDonald’s project director, said:

“Mott MacDonald is a leading consultancy in advising on the planning, development and on-going provision of the full spectrum of coastal management. We have extensive experience in assessing the issues arising at coastlines in order to produce viable, affordable and sustainable solutions.”

The project adds to Mott Macdonald’s impressive portfolio of work in the sector, which includes the £10 million Central Felixstowe Coast Protection Scheme. Peter Phipps added that the scheme, which was completed in autumn 2012, had performed well during the winter storms of 2013/14.

The Essex scheme is due to be completed by autumn 2015.
