New world first standard for cutting carbon in infrastructure released

The Green Construction Board and British Standards Institution have launched a new Publically Available Specification (PAS) document for carbon management in infrastructure.

With technical input from Arup and Mott MacDonald, PAS 2080:2016 is the world’s first specification for managing and reducing whole life carbon emissions in infrastructure.

The PAS document has been created for practitioners through the whole value chain including asset owner and managers, through to designers, constructors and suppliers. It creates a framework to consistently manage carbon emissions and includes components on organisational leadership, baseline setting, measurement, reporting and continuous improvement. Critically, it does this by structuring the approach around the common work stages of infrastructure delivery.

Tim Chapman, Director of Infrastructure, Arup commented:

“PAS 2080 has the potential to be a real game-changer and a powerful mechanism for change in our sector. We now have an approach for addressing the challenge of climate change; supporting dedicated professionals throughout the supply chain to make positive changes, creating an environment for innovation as well as cost reduction.”

Arup and its PAS 2080 certified engineers, will now focus on the implementation of PAS 2080, rolling it out the firm’s own projects and testing its processes against the requirements of the specification.

PAS 2080 – Carbon Management in Infrastructure, which is accompanied by a detailed 82 page guidance document, will be available to buy on the British Standard’s Institute’s website. Click here for more information.
