AECOM awarded £49m contract by Yorkshire Water

Technical support services firm AECOM has been awarded two design-build contracts together worth £49million in joint venture to upgrade the Blackburn Meadows Wastewater Treatment Plant in Sheffield.

Under the first contract, which is valued at approximately £30million and part of the Yorkshire Water’s large schemes framework, the company will upgrade the water treatment process. This includes new inlet works, new and refurbished primary tanks, and aeration lanes to ensure that Blackburn Meadows meets the requirements of the European Union’s Freshwater Fish Directive.

For the second contract, valued at approximately £19million, the AECOM team will provide a new mesophilic anaerobic digestion plant. This project will treat all sludge from Blackburn Meadows and the surrounding wastewater treatment works. The plant will be designed to treat up to 21,000 tons of dry solid sludge annually, including thickening and dewatering processes, as well as minimizing Yorkshire Water’s carbon footprint by producing renewable energy via a combined heat and power system.

AECOM's joint venture partner is construction company Galliford Try.
