The work on the restoration of natural features on river Dee will include the creation of riverside corridors with stock fencing, and in-river works including weir removals, gravel and boulder placement and brash revetment works.
The LIFE Dee River is a £6.8 million project under the EU LIFE program and focuses on the restoration of freshwater features in River Dee and Bala Lake/Afon Dyfrdwy a Llyn Tegid Special Area of Conservation (SAC ).
The scope of restoration works to be carried out under the framework includes:
- introduction of gravels, boulders and large woody debris into the water courses to create habitats and restore natural features;
- creating riverside corridors with fencing along the Dee and its tributaries thereby reducing the impacts of livestock and pollutants entering the watercourses;
- planting of trees to improve riparian zone habitat, stabilise banks and reduce erosion;
- partial weir removal and reprofiling;
- minor works including small culvert works and construction of footbridges;
- on farm works to reduce nutrients and sediments entering watercourses.
Natural Resources Wales is looking to appoint up to four suppliers, which will run for four years.
