United Utilities has awarded a number of contracts for the supply of pressure management valve (PMV) controllers and associated data systems during AMP7.
United Utilities has a centralised command and control function for the water network, managed through an Integrated Control Centre (ICC) - automation and control of pressure management valve (PMV) controllers is needed in order to enable a calm network.

United Utilities has around 4,000 pressure management valves (PMVs) in place within its water network. Currently, of necessity extensive planning and control has to take place when adjustment or manual intervention of the asset in emergency situations is required, including:
- manpower
- H&S control measures
- manual handling
- confined space work
- traffic management
- noticing
The PMV controllers will contribute to the water company’s proposed strategy for AMP7 within the water network for the extended use of remote controlled intelligent PMVs within UU, negating the need for the majority of the existing planning and control activities.
Via the use of the controllers, automation and control will be achieved using new and innovative technologies through the installation of remote control of PMVs and pumping stations, .
United Utilities’ initial requirement is for 733 PRV Controllers, with a potential ongoing requirement for significantly more to be delivered under the framework. The controllers must meet the following requirements;
- All controllers delivered must come complete with the correct connectivity, data provision ability and ancillary connection equipment as per the required technical specification.
- All controllers must come with a minimum of 2 years up to a 5-year warranty.
- All controllers must be delivered to the timescales/lead times as set out within the agreement.
Three companies were in the bidding for the framework – and Technolog Ltd, HWM-Water Ltd and I2O Water Ltd have all been awarded contracts.
