The Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra) has gone out to tender with a contract for a Data Sharing Platform to support the European Union’s Spatial Data Infrastructure which is worth an estimated £3 million.
Defra is the lead body on the European Union INSPIRE Directive which aims to create a spatial data infrastructure for the purposes of EU environmental policies and policies or activities which may have an impact on the environment. The Directive came into force on 15 May 2007 and will be implemented in various stages, with full implementation required by 2021.
As an evidence-led department, Defra collects a substantial amount of environmental data with a wealth of uses beyond those required internally. The department is the lead publisher of open data in government, having released over 8000 datasets in 2016.
The proposed Data Sharing Platform consists of two services which will be used for sharing Defra’s data internally and externally with public and partners. The five year contract is being tendered in 2 separate Lots:
Lot 1 - Spatial/Non-Spatial
Lot 2 - Linked Data
Time limit for receipt of tenders or requests to participate is 24th November 2017 – click here to access the tender documentation.
