Northern Ireland Water has awarded a contract for the collection and disposal of waste by skip and scrap metal recycling worth an estimated £3 million.
Wastes disposed of under the contract will include grit and screenings from the utility's wastewater treatment works (WwTW). The grit that is collected at the WwTWs is road grit, small stones and particles that are immersed and carried in the sewage through the system to the WwTWs.
The screenings consist of rags, plastic bottles, paper, ‘sharps’ and other types of disposable materials that have entered the wastewater networks system and are collected at the WwTW in screens.
Other waste materials to be collected under the contract include excavated spoil collected as a result of excavations for the installation/repair of the water company’s infrastructure, together with other general scrap and waste.
NI Water has awarded the contract to Portadown firm R. Heatrick Ltd, one of two companies who bid for the work.
