United Utilities has gone out to tender with a contract to refurbish the 20 kilometre Cornhow to Stainburn water mains as part of its £multi-million Thirlmere transfer project.
The contract is for the design, construction and commissioning of approximately 20 kilometres of water mains refurbishment using slip line technology and pipe laying techniques in West Cumbria.
Interested suppliers will need to complete Pre-Qualification Questionnaire - deadline for submission of information is 27Th July.
United Utilities’ Thirlmere Transfer water supplies project for West Cumbria includes 32 kilometres of raw water aqueduct, 37 kilometres of new water mains, three new pumping stations, a new WTW and three new service reservoirs.
The firm will need to stop using Ennerdale as a source of water by 2025, as the Environment Agency has confirmed that it will withdraw the abstraction licence for Ennerdale.
United Utilities has now published its preferred route, which utilises gravity for the majority of the new pipeline. Phase 2 of its consultation on the scheme concluded on 31st May. Developing the new pipeline means the water company will no longer need to take water from environmentally sensitive lakes and rivers in West Cumbria, including Ennerdale Water and Crummock Water.
