With 600 schools and businesses in Hampshire set to benefit from free water-saving visits to help reduce their bills and improve efficiency, Southern Water estimates that the initiative will save more than 3 million litres of water every day.
Measures implemented via the the initiative could include through targeting leaky loos and taps, fitting water-saving devices and introducing other sustainable solutions such as rainwater harvesting, where water is recycled for another use.
Reducing water usage is key in the water-stressed South East, where hotter summers, less rainfall and an increasing population is increasing pressure on water supplies.
Southern Water’s Water Efficiency Delivery Lead Kim Turnbull said:
“It’s essential we do everything we can to save water, and we know we can make a big impact through working with businesses and schools.
“Between April 2024 and April 2025 we carried out 300 visits across our region, saving more than 1.67 million litres a day.
“We’re now doubling that number of visits in Hampshire, with an estimated saving of more than 3 million litres a day - good news for the environment and for customers' pockets.”
The water company has committed to cutting business water consumption across its network by 9% by 2037, a target also supported by its Business Partnership Fund, which has so far seen nearly £300, 000 awarded in grants to help companies bring their water-saving ideas to life.
In Hampshire, Longdown Activity Farm in Ashurst used its award to save more than 780,00 litres of water a year by installing low-flow taps and a rainwater harvesting system, while Winchester’s Theatre Royal saved 225,000 litres a year through upgrading to more water-efficient bathrooms.
Southern Water also seen a record year for network leakage reduction in the 12 months running up to April, with around 18% cut, from 108.1 million litres per day to 91.1 million litres per day which saved 17 million litres each day - enough to serve 5,000 customers.
