Southern Water has started work on a £4 million scheme to improve the sewer network in a Hampshire village.
The major work will reduce bursts on a section of sewer near Southampton - the £4 million scheme will involve the water company’s teams relining more than 500 meters of sewer at Ashurst Bridge near Totton and will last around three weeks.
The sewer in this area has had several bursts over the last five years. Southern Water has carried out a number of investigations to assess the issues and work on a long-term solution to prevent the pressurised sewer (also known as a rising main) from bursting.
Project engineer for Southern Water, Jason Masters said:
“We want to put an end to the regular disruption our customers in this area have faced over the last few years.
“We’re delighted to now get started on a solution that will make a real difference. By relining this section of sewer it will provide much-needed resilience to our network and reduce the likelihood of future issues.
During the work dozens of tankers will be in use as the water company manages flows to reduce the impact on customers, we’re sorry for the disruption this is causing.
Further work to alleviate issues in the area will take place over the next two years.
