Southern Water is getting ready to start planned improvement works later this year at Bewl Water to ensure a safe and sustainable long-term future for the vital reservoir.
Although subject to confirmation, works are expected to start this autumn with planned completion during Spring 2024. The total cost will be £16.5 million.
The works are taking place at the northern end of the reservoir, on the engineered section of the dam wall, helping to maintain safety and future-proof the site against effects of climate change.
The project will improve Southern Water’s ability to reduce the water level when needed in the unlikely event of an emergency, thanks to a new siphon draw-down system located at the existing dam.
The works are planned to meet guidance from the Environment Agency.
The reservoir is the largest stretch of open water in the South East, and is a popular attraction for water sports and other leisure pursuits.
