Anglian Water is inviting the public to say whether they would be willing to pay an extra £2 a year on their water bills to help vulnerable customers.
The water company is asking for simple yes or no responses via two separate polls on Facebook and Twitter, together with the option of leaving a comment or asking a question.
Anglian is asking customers whether they would be happy to pay £2 extra on their water bill to fund more specialist services for customers in vulnerable circumstances, including those with health conditions, the elderly, and people with disabilities.
Setting out the background to the poll, the utility explains that it currently offers specialist services to vulnerable customers, including extra help in the case of an interruption to the local water supply if they are signed up for the Priority Services register and the offer of special tariffs for those on low incomes. Anglian Water explains:
“We are currently doing what we are required to do by our regulators, but there is more we could do to help that is not related to special tariffs. However this will cost money. Are you prepared to spend an extra £2 on your annual bill to subsidise extra services?”
The water company suggests that this could include more specialist staff delivering a swifter response for those in need, which is more tailored to their circumstances. It also goes on to say clearly “Or maybe you think it’s not a water company’s job to provide this service.”
To date the water company has currently had 188 votes via Facebook and 97 votes via Twitter.
