Scottish Water is to invest in a major upgrade to its water mains network in Cumbernauld to improve its service to customers.
The utility has confirmed that it will be investing in major improvements to part of the local water mains network to provide customers with additional resilience and security of supply.
The investment follows some bursts on a water main in the area, including one in May 2017 which caused disruption to normal water supplies to about 6000 customers.
Scottish Water engineers are working on finalising the planned investment and the company will confirm in due course what the project will involve. It is expected to start this autumn and be completed in spring 2018.
John Rae, Scottish Water’s water operations general manager, said:
“We have previously taken a number of steps in Cumbernauld to reduce the impact of burst water mains and minimise disruption to customers, such as the installation of a burst control valve and backfeeds, and this enabled us to substantially limit the number of properties whose supplies were disrupted following the burst in May.
“However, we aim to further reduce the risk of disruption and we said after the incident in May that we would investigate further investment to improve our infrastructure.
“We can now confirm that we will make that investment in the local network - further details will be confirmed in the coming weeks.”
