SES Water: £1.4m water main scheme to strengthen network resilience

SES Water has started work on a £1.4 million scheme to renew four kilometres of water main from Beare Green to Capel to ensure customers benefit from a more robust network.

The essential work is split into two sections running simultaneously - the first phase will be finished in January 2018 with the overall scheme due for completion in early 2019.

The programme is extremely important to safeguard the supplies for local residents. The Capel area, including Ockley, is at the extremity of SES Water’s supply network and one of the main aims of the scheme is to be able to supply this area from other parts of the network if required. When the scheme is complete it will improve connectivity with Dorking and make the network more resilient.

Large parts of the network mains in the area were laid in the late Victorian era and the pipes are now reaching the end of their working life. They will be replaced with larger, tougher plastic pipes that are less prone to leaks and bursts.

Leading the project, Civil Engineer Chris Burnup said:

“Analysing recent supply failures in the area has shown that the mains need replacing which will ensure that we can continue to reliably transport thousands of litres of high quality water to these locations for many years to come.”
