Drinking water in Scotland at its highest ever quality

Scottish Water has welcomed the 2015 report published yesterday by the independent Drinking Water Quality Regulator (DWQR) which confirms the highest ever quality of Scotland's tap water.

Samples of the water supply taken at customers’ taps achieved 99.92% compliance with strict quality standards  at customers' taps -  the water company's best ever performance.

On average a test was carried out at a customer tap every 3.5 minutes, meaning nearly 150,000 were completed in 2015. In total, more than 300,000 tests were undertaken, including samples taken at water treatment works and service reservoirs across Scotland.

Douglas Millican, chief executive of Scottish Water said:

“Scottish Water is investing £340 million in this regulatory period 2015-21  to improve drinking water quality.”

“We want to ensure that all our customers enjoy the look and taste of their tap water. It is good news that water quality is at its highest level but we will continue to look at how we can improve our service even further and ensure every one of our customers enjoys the highest quality drinking water available in Scotland.

“We also want to build resilience and better reliability into our service. We welcome a significant reduction in customer contacts about discoloured water - down around (33%) compared to 2014 and the lowest level in the last four years.

“However, we are determined to continue to invest to ensure that all our customers enjoy the look and taste of their drinking water.

“We continue to work with the Drinking Water Quality Regulator to help us focus on the areas we need to address and improve on, ensuring that performance continues to improve and we deliver the service our customers expect.”
