Yorkshire Water is currently spending £2.5 million on improvements at Springhead water pumping station in Hull.
Springhead pumping station is located in Willerby and pumps water from the boreholes onsite to Keldgate water treatment works for treatment and then supply to residents of Hull and East Riding. It supplies 25 million litres of water every day - a third of Hull and East Riding’s daily water supply.
The pumping station is a Grade 2 listed building which dates back to 1864. Over the years the building has been the subject of numerous thefts and acts of vandalism including the removal of the slate roof tiles. It’s therefore in need of some restoration which complies with its Grade 2 listed status.
Building renovation specialists, William Birch & Sons, are carrying out the project for Yorkshire Water. Work to ensure the building is weather resistant and water tight started at the end of September – the contractor will remain onsite until the project is finished in summer 2016.
Yorkshire Water Project Manager Mark Doherty said:
”This pumping station provides a third of the daily water supply to Hull and East Riding so it’s important we protect and refurbish the building.”
“Although we will try to keep any disruption to a minimum, the project may have an impact on the local community. We hope the local community can bear with us as we improve the building and restore Springhead to its former glory.”

Speaking in the House of Commons on 21 July 2025, then environment secretary Steve Reed said, “This Government will cut water companies’ sewage pollution in half by the end of the decade.”
