Yorkshire Water has made a direct contract award of a £1.8 million contract to a single supplier for the supply of liquid-phase nitrous oxide (N₂O) monitoring equipment and associated calibration equipment for use at its wastewater treatment sites.

The equipment will provide continuous monitoring of dissolved N₂O concentrations and temperature within activated sludge process lanes and includes sensor probes, controllers, calibration equipment, associated accessories and manufacturer support.
The £1.8 million (inc VAT) contract is for equipment must be supplied directly by the original equipment manufacturer and is required to enable the collection of N₂O monitoring data for baseline establishment and operational performance assessment.
The equipment, which will be supplied to 13 wastewater treatment sites, must support continuous data collection, integration with telemetry and control systems, and operation in accordance with Yorkshire Water's specified technical and environmental requirements.
The quantity of sensors, controllers and associated equipment required will vary by site in accordance with the site-specific design and monitoring requirements.
Installation and commissioning will be undertaken by Yorkshire Water, or through a separately contracted delivery partner under an existing framework agreement.
The justification for the direct award to a single supplier was made for technical reasons
Yorkshire Water had firstly engaged the market for a managed service but pivoted from the approach due to the need for a direct contract with the manufacturer, saying this offered improved collaboration on potential future developments. Through the market engagement, the water company had confirmed that there was only a single manufacturer capable of direct supply for liquid phase N₂O monitoring devices which have been tested in the UK Water industry.
The contract has been awarded to Denmark- headquartered firm Unisense Environment A/S. Current estimated start and end contract dates are 23 October 2026 to 22 October 2031.Earliest date the contract will be signed is 23 October 2026.
