Work on a £450,000 water mains scheme in Leatherhead for Sutton and East Surrey Water gets underway next month.
The water company is replacing an old iron water mains with new, high performance plastic pipes that are less prone to bursts and leaks.
Construction work on the project will start on 5th October 2015 and last for approximately six months.
Simon Thomson, Project Engineer at Sutton and East Surrey Water, said:
“The existing water mains – some of which were laid in the 1930s – have done sterling work in transporting thousands of litres of water every day for many years. “
“However, they are now reaching the end of their lifespan, with an increasing number of bursts occurring. Each time this happens it causes unplanned emergency repairs, interruptions to customers’ water supplies and the loss of water through leaks and bursts.
“Our scheme will make sure both existing and future customers in Leatherhead continue to receive a reliable supply of top quality drinking water.”
The scheme forms part of Sutton and East Surrey Water’s £17.25 million investment programme during 2015/16 to upgrade its extensive network of pipes, pumping stations and treatment works, including:
- £6 million to replace ageing water mains that are prone to bursts and leaks
- £2 million on projects to maintain and improve water treatment works to keep customers’ taps flowing with high quality water
- £2.2 million on installing more water meters to households across our supply area
- £1 million on environmental improvements
