Interserve: sustainability now part of procurement process and supply chain contracts

Interserve, the FTSE 250-listed international support services and construction group, has introduced its sustainable procurement process to subcontractors and supply chain contracts.

The move is part of a number of measures aimed at moving Interserve towards its 2020 sustainability targets set out in its annual report published today on progress to date following the launch of its SustainAbilities plan in 2013.

Highlights of the report include10% reduction in total construction waste, 26% reduction in on-site energy generation emissions and a  4.3% reduction in water use. The company has also introduced its sustainable procurement process to subcontractors and supply chain contracts. Executive performance pay has also now been linked to Interserve’s sustainability targets.

SustainAbilities is a  comprehensive, business-wide sustainability plan, which sets out ambitious targets for 2020 and ultimately is helping Interserve to manage risk in its operations and to increase opportunities for profitable growth now and in the future.

The report provides the first set of performance data to compare with the 2013 baseline. The firm said the report demonstrateed positive progress, with Interserve having met or exceeded its initial set of 2014 targets in areas such as sustainable procurement, provision of school work placements, local employment rates, and more. Alongside this, it also highlights the main challenges and the areas where improvements still need to be made as Interserve progresses towards its 2016, 2018 and 2020 sustainability targets.

Key developments in 2014 include:

  • A sustainable procurement process and supply chain code of conduct has been successfully introduced to over 1,500 subcontractors and supply chain contracts - 61% of Interserve’s supply chain spend was with SME’s in 2014
  • 762 senior managers now have sustainability targets set as part of their personal appraisal targets. Additionally, from 2015, elements of Interserve’s CEO and CFO performance pay are linked to achieving sustainability targets
  • 80% of timber procured globally in 2014 was certified to PEFC or FSC standards. Interserve also achieved a 10% reduction in total construction waste from its operations, a reduction of emissions from UK on-site energy generation by 26%, and a 4.3% reduction in water use from UK operations

"Businesses that act responsibly can - and will - thrive”

Tim Haywood, Group Finance Director and Head of Sustainability said:

“With public trust in business at very low levels, it is all the more important that companies share and celebrate the positive impact that they are having.

“Interserve’s second annual SustainAbilities progress report, which we have released today, reflects our wide-ranging social, environmental and community achievements. The report demonstrates the many ways in which Interserve is a company that values more than just money.”

“Above all, we want to show that businesses that act responsibly can - and will - thrive.”
