A new contract with npower will see half of Yorkshire Water’s energy needs met through renewable electricity supplied by Selby-based Haven Power.
Drax-owned Haven Power will supply Yorkshire Water with renewable energy via npower until March 2017 - the collaboration amongst these energy companies will save the water company £250k.
Yorkshire Water’s own renewable energy generation has increased by nearly 80% over the last year - the company is expecting to generate 75 gigawatt hours this year.
The company has seen an increase of 80% in renewable energy generation, thanks to strong operational performance from existing assets as well as increasing generation from the two new facilities at Bradford and Sheffield.
Treating more sludge than ever is one of the main reasons for the surge in renewable energy being generated by Yorkshire Water - 97,000 tonnes are now being dealt with at the company’s key “top 11” sites dotted around the region, an increase of 48%.
This has contributed to a reduction in the company’s carbon footprint by 15,000 tonnes in the last year.
In December Yorkshire Water was awarded the prestigious Carbon Trust Standard for a second time, recognising their efforts to reduce the organisation's carbon footprint. To win the award organisations need to meet three criteria:
- Provide an accurate footprint measurement including all required emission sources.
- Demonstrate an absolute reduction of its footprint or equivalent relative efficiency improvement.
- Demonstrate good carbon management to the carbon trust, including leadership, governance, accounting and targeting.
