Emergency teams from Sutton and East Surrey Water have been working since Tuesday evening to repair a water main in Chipstead damaged by a telecommunications contractor.
A road had to be closed after a telecommunications contractor drilled through a trunk main on Tuesday evening while laying new cables, causing flooding in the area. Up to 40 properties and six shops have been flooded with water levels up to 1metre deep.
An SESW customer liaison team is on site dealing with individual issues. The water company has also engaged specialist company Belfor to assist with the clean-up following the flooding.
Around 2,500 customers in the area have also suffered temporary loss of pressure or supply. SESW has also been supplying bottled water to affected customers.
Ian Adams, Engineering Manager at Sutton and East Surrey Water, said:
“The telecommunications contractor caused significant damage by drilling through our trunk main which led to flooding and failure of water supply to homes in the vicinity of Outwood Lane and Holly Lane. We sincerely apologise to customers for this disruption.”
“We are extremely grateful to the emergency services for their support throughout this incident.”
