A groundbreaking report published today by a coalition of 25 leading conservation and research organisations has reveals that 60% of native UK plant and animal species studied have declined over recent decades – with more than one in ten under threat of disappearing from the UK altogether.
The key findings of The State of Nature report indicate that recent environmental changes are having a dramatic impact on nature in the UK.
The Report says says that 60% of the 3,148 UK species assessed have declined over the last 50 years and 31% have declined strongly. Of more than 6,000 species that have been assessed using modern Red List criteria, more than one in 10 are thought to be under threat of extinction in the UK.
The groundbreaking stocktake of native British species is the first of its kind in the UK. However, the Report is highlighting the existing lack of knowledge on the trends of most of the UK’s species. As a result, it is can report quantitative trends for only 5% of the 59,000 or so terrestrial and freshwater species in the UK, and for very few of the 8,500 marine species.
The report says that more now needs to be done to improve the existing knowledge base. The intention is produce more State of Nature reports in the future.
