Mr John Price pleaded guilty to 7 charges brought against him at Kidderminster Magistrates Court in relation to unconsented work at Kingsland in Herefordshire in November 2020 and December 2021.

A spokesperson for Natural England and the Environment Agency said:

"Natural England and the Environment Agency launched a joint prosecution against Mr John Price of Kingsland, Herefordshire, following an investigation into unconsented work at Kingsland, in November 2020 and December 2021.

"The first hearing took place on Wednesday 18 May and the defendant entered a guilty plea to 7 charges, and the case was adjourned. Sentencing is likely to be later this year.

"Natural England and the Environment Agency take their roles in protecting the environment seriously and will use their enforcement powers to take robust action against those who ignore the law."

The charges included carrying out operations on a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) without consent, contravening a stop notice, contravening the Environmental Permitting Regulations and contravening the Reduction and Prevention of Agricultural Diffuse Pollution Regulations.

Unconsented works within the River Lugg Site of Special Scientific Interest occurred late November 2020 and December 2021. Natural England and the Environment Agency have concluded an investigation into the circumstances of the incidents.

The investigation has been complex, where the ecological impact and damage that has been caused has been examined. Consent is required before any works are carried out within a SSSI, to the river or to the felling of particular trees.

Natural England is responsible for ensuring protection of SSSI areas and the Environment Agency is responsible for flood risk management, fish and spawning and the way rivers function
