Northumbrian Water is progressing further work on the North East Catchments Hub in partnership with The Rivers Trust.

To support the development of catchment and nature-based solutions (C&NBS) in PR24, the water company created a strategic partnership with The Rivers Trust in April 2022. The NWG/Rivers Trust partnership established the North East Catchments Hub (NECH); a new, currently informal organisation, which has brought catchment resources, expertise and partner engagement capacity into the region.
Northumbrian Water has now awarded a contract to The Rivers Trust enable further catchment investigations and activities up to March 2025. This will support catchment activities across 47 water bodies, representing investment in catchment solutions to meet requirements of the Water Framework Directive (WFD), to be delivered in partnership by 2035.
There is also the potential for a further extension to an additional phase of work if the partnership is successful and delivers on the contract.
The contract was awarded without going out to competitive tender - the deliverables and associated costs for the contract have been negotiated within the collaborative strategic alliance established between NWG and The Rivers Trust.
The negotiation has been agreed on the basis that the services provided by The Rivers Trust are uniquely specialist to the organisational nature, community influence and industry advocacy abilities of The Rivers Trust.
