Environment Agency and Anglian Water trial reduced river flow scheme

The Environment Agency, in partnership with Anglian Water and the Wild Trout Trust, are proposing to trial a lower minimum required river flow downstream of Rutland Water reservoir during operation of the River Gwash to River Glen transfer.

The Environment Agency, in partnership with Anglian Water Services Limited and the Wild Trout Trust, are proposing to trial a lower minimum required riverdownstream of Rutland Water reservoir, during operation of the River Gwash to River Glen transfer.

Over the next five years this project will trial a lower minimum required river flow in the River Gwash, a tributary of the River Welland. The trial which will reduce the quantity of water passing through the river each day will be in place at Belmesthorpe gauging station when operating the Gwash to Glen transfer.

During this time the Environment Agency will reduce the minimum required flow from 27,000 cubic metres a day to 21,600 cubic metres a day. The flow will be reduced by releasing less water from Rutland Water into the river.

Throughout the year Anglian Water Services Limited release a statutory amount of water from Rutland Water into the River Gwash; this will remain unchanged during the trial.

The intention of the trial is to improve the water management, ecology and fisheries of the River Gwash - the Agency will monitor the river throughout the trial.
