United Utilities is upgrading the sewerage system serving Grasmere - some of the money will be spent to enhance phosphorus removal at Grasmere wastewater treatment works, while the remainder will be used to keep the local sewer network flowing more smoothly.
The wastewater treatment works already has equipment to remove phosphorus from the treated wastewater which is returned to the environment. The extra investment will support the trial of a new technology to remove even more phosphorus, benefiting the environment, and in particular, Grasmere Lake.
Phosphorus is a nutrient that can stimulate the growth of algal blooms which reduce oxygen in rivers and lakes - with a negative impact on aquatic life. The enhanced phosphorus removal process at the treatment works will be trialled for the next 12 months, while work to strengthen the pipe network in under way.
As well as the upgrade at the treatment works, United Utilities will be investing in the local sewer network. Currently, groundwater can find its way into sewer pipes in parts of the network, especially areas close to the River Rothay. The presence of groundwater means the sewer network can fill up more quickly - leading to a greater risk of sewer spills which can be damaging the environment.
Strengthening the pipe network at strategic locations will reduce groundwater infiltration and ease pressure on the sewers.
