Plans to reduce risk of flooding for Dolgellau submitted

Natural Resources Wales has submitted plans to build a flood scheme to reduce the risk of flooding for homes and businesses in Dolgellau.

The proposed scheme will improve the standard of flood protection to 182 residential properties and 128 commercial businesses at risk from the Wnion and Aran rivers. Dolgellau has a history of flooding problems and most recently in 2009 resulted in the wall at Bont Fawr being overtopped.

After completing a consultation on the scheme and final designs, Natural Resources Wales submitted a planning application to Snowdonia National Park earlier this year.

The current improvement plans include putting in new defences and improving some of the existing defences along the left bank of the river Wnion, from the Enterprise Park to the Aran Road area and repairs to existing structures and construction of some new walls to the Afon Aran. The Aran weir will also be removed as part of the scheme.

Keith Ivens, Flood Risk Manager at Natural Resources Wales said that if the application is approved, construction work is likely to start in autumn 2014 and take approximately 9 months to complete.

The project is funded by the Welsh Government’s Infrastructure Investment Plan.
