Cumberland Council advances flood relief plans for Millom

Cumberland Council is advancing flood relief plans for Millom following a severe storm and flooding in the town in June.

The council said it had responded promptly to the severe storm and flooding in Millom on Saturday 21 and Sunday 22 June, with officers and other risk management authority colleagues offering support, gathering evidence, and engaging with affected residents.

Cumberland Council has been exploring long-term solutions to reduce the risk and impact of flooding in Millom. Following an appraisal and optioneering exercise to identify the most viable options, the council is now preparing to submit a formal business case to the Environment Agency in early July. The proposal seeks funding for a dedicated flood alleviation scheme in Millom, and the council is hopeful for a decision later this summer.

Once funding decisions are confirmed, Cumberland Council will host a series of community drop-in events to share information, gather feedback, and ensure local voices continue to shape the scheme. All residents are being encouraged to take part and contribute to the development of the project.

Cumberland Councillor Bob Kelly, Executive Member for Cumberland Environment and Planning and elected member for Millom, said:

“It is understandable that the community feels frustrated and angry about the ongoing flooding issues in Millom. I am, however, aware of the extensive work happening behind the scenes to ensure a robust and feasible business case can be put forward.

“We hope to share the outcomes of this work very soon and look forward to engaging with all stakeholders. In particular, I am hopeful that the dreadful situation faced by those affected by repeated flooding and effluent problems will soon come to an end.”
