Northumbrian Water is to invest an additional £1.75 million into a programme of work to help protect homes in North Tyneside from flooding - work on the £2.5 million sewer upgrade in North Cullercoats began in May earlier this year.
Now the water company is extending the programme of work to further help reduce the risk of flooding. Residents in North Tyneside are being invited to find out more about and give their feedback on the plans at a customer information session taking place on Tuesday next week.
Experts from Northumbrian Water and contractor, Esh Group, will be on hand to answer any queries about the scheme and talk through the proposals in detail.
The proposed scheme extension is due to begin on 16th November and is expected to take up to nine months to complete.
Work will involve the installation of 290 metres of new sewer pipes and manholes, together with the installation of an underground storage tank at the east end of Cullercoats Football Club’s playing fields, capable of holding up to one million litres of water during times of heavy rainfall.
Graeme Ridley, Northumbrian Water’s Project Manager, said: “
We appreciate the devastating impact flooding can have on residents and businesses and we’re committed to working in partnership with North Tyneside Council to reduce the likelihood of it happening again.
“We’re upgrading the network that serves Cullercoats and looking at local solutions, in order to be better prepared for the future.
“Flood prevention remains a council priority"
Phil Scott, Head of Environment, Housing and Leisure at North Tyneside Council added:
“Flood prevention remains a council priority, and along with our partners, we are working extremely hard to minimise the risk and impact of future incidents.”
“I would really encourage residents to attend this event – as well as having a chance to find out first hand about what the plans are and why they are needed, they will also be able to chat to staff and share their views on the scheme.”
Northumbrian Water’s community portal, www.nw-northcullercoatsproject.co.uk, which was designed to support the original flood alleviation scheme in North Cullercoats, will also be extended to cover the work on the scheme.
Flooding works in the borough are overseen by the North Tyneside Surface Water and Drainage Partnership, which brings together a range of organisations to help improve how the borough prepares for and deals with future flooding incidents.
The Partnership brings together North Tyneside Council and its technical business partner Capita with Northumbrian Water, the Environment Agency and the area’s emergency services to deliver a package of improvements and co-ordinate a borough Flood Risk Management Strategy.
