CH2M HILL to provide advice on £86m Shieldhall Strategic Tunnel

CH2M HILL has been appointed to provide technical advisory and site supervision of construction services in support of the Shieldhall Strategic Tunnel project in central Scotland.

The CH2M HILL appointment follows the recent announcement by Scottish Water that the Glasgow Tunnel Partnership, a Joint Venture between Costain Limited and Vinci Grands Projets, has been selected as the preferred bidder for the design and construction contract.

The project, which is estimated to be in the region of £100 million, will include the design and construction of five kilometres of new 4.65 metre diameter sewer tunnel in the urbanised south side of Glasgow - improving water quality in the River Clyde and its tributaries whilst alleviating sewer flooding in the area.

With construction due to commence later this year, the project will see work carried out in some of the most challenging ground conditions in the UK. The completion date is set for early 2018 and progress so far shows the project is "well on course" to meet this deadline.

Commenting on this appointment, Martin Knights, Managing Director of Tunnels and Earth Engineering, said:

"This announcement is another great example of the commitment Scottish Water is taking to improving the environment in Glasgow. CH2M HILL carried out the previous optioneering and reference design phases and is pleased to be appointed to continue to support this prestigious project through to completion. With over 300 people operating out of our Glasgow offices, we have a wide array of skills and resources in this sector and look forward to continuing our work for Scottish Water and the Glasgow Tunnels Partnership in the coming months.”

During the current 2010 to 2015 regulatory investment cycle, Scottish Water will have invested over £250 million in improving water quality and alleviating sewer flooding in the Glasgow area.

CH2M HILL has operated in the UK for over 20 years. Its and it. CH2M HILL, which employs over 3,400 people in the UK and has its European headquarters in London, is also working on the Thames Tideway Tunnels.
