The Ministry of Defence (MoD) is getting ready to tender a contract for water and wastewater services worth an estimated £1.5 billion.

The Defence Infrastructure Organisation (DIO) on behalf of the MoD is currently considering options to secure the provision of water and wastewater services and the operation and maintenance of MoD's Private Water Network upon the expiry of the Aquatrine Public Finance Initiatives (PFIs) in 2028 and 2030.
The services are currently provided by Aquatrine, which delivers one of the largest water and wastewater PFI contracts in Europe, for a term of 25 years with the MOD. Since 2003 the provision of water and wastewater services has been managed by three service providers - Severn Trent Services, Ancala Water Services and Veolia Water Nevis.
Aquatrine is a partnering contract which brings together the MOD’s department responsible for Aquatrine – DIO - with its three service providers and provides the services through the operation and maintenance of MOD water and wastewater assets on circa. 4,000 MOD sites across Great Britain.
Estimated start and end dates for the upcoming contract are 1 February 2028 to 1 December 2038, with a further potential extension option to 1 December 2041.
The Defence Infrastructure Organisation expects to issue a formal tender notice in August 2025.
