Yorkshire Water awards £80m Hull and Huddersfield sewage and sludge treatment project

Mott Macdonald Bentley and J Murphy and Sons Ltd have been awarded two separate contracts for the design, build, commissioning and short term operation of works at two Yorkshire Water sites in the Yorkshire region worth an estimated £80 million in total.

The contract covers work at two sites - Calder Valley Incinerator, Upper Brighouse and Saltend Sewage Treatment Works in Hull.

Mott MacDonald Bentley will carry out the works at the sludge treatment facility for the Saltend Sewage Treatment Works in Hull which will include maintaining the existing sludge treatment capability during the delivery of the works, to provide a new inlet works and an upgrade to the existing anaerobic digestion plant. The existing inlet works will be retained and configured to continue treating storm flows. The works are expected to include coarse screening, grit removal and fine screening, with screens handling, grit handling, odour control and liquor return pumping. The scope will include refurbishment of the site's potable and final effluent water systems and ensuring odours created by the new assets are effectively managed.

At the Calder Valley Incinerator, Upper Brighouse, J Murphy will work on a new regional new sludge treatment facility in Huddersfield with a treatment capacity of 16 500 tds/annum includes demolition of the incinerator and other redundant site assets and construction of a new anaerobic digestion plant. The biogas from the digestion process will be collected and processed to to reduce the net operating costs using either CHP or Gas to Grid technology.
