The Scottish Borders Council has awarded a contract for the Selkirk flood protection scheme main works worth an estimated £18.67 million.
The Selkirk Flood Protection Scheme is intended to provide a significant improvement in flood protection to over 650 residential and business properties in and around Selkirk.
The scope of the project includes:
- Adaption of the outlet at St Mary's Loch to improve the loch's flood storage capabilities, including MEICA upgrades, telemetry and small scale flood resilience and flood protection works around the loch (flood defence bunds, access track raising).
- Raising of 200 m of the A708 Selkirk to Moffat road
- Construction of 2.9 km of imported fill flood defence embankments.
- Construction of 3.1 km of reinforced concrete flood defence walls.
- Construction of 0.38 km of sheet piled retaining wall in dense gravelly soils.
- Construction of approx. 0.72 km of erosion protection to the banks of the Ettrick Water in three separate locations.
- Provision of 3.0 km of Contractor design seepage protection, up to 8.0 m below ground level.
- Construction of 0.8 km of new 7 m wide river channel, offline from existing watercourse.
- Online widening of 0.15 km of existing watercourse.
- Construction of 110 m long offline storm overflow culvert and new inlet and outlet structures.
- Construction of approx. 75 m of online culvert.
Glasgow-based firm RJ Mcleod (Contractors) Ltd has won the contract, one of five companies to bid for the work.
