Esh Construction has completed a major restoration programme at Abbeydale Dam in Sheffield, securing the long-term future of one of the city’s most significant heritage assets.

Delivered on behalf of Sheffield City Council in partnership with Sheffield Museums Trust, the £1.3 million project has repaired and strengthened the 18th-century dam at Abbeydale Industrial Hamlet, a Scheduled Monument and internationally important industrial heritage site.
The works were commissioned back in 2021 after significant leaks developed within the dam structure, resulting in water escaping through the North East corner and creating pressure behind the historic stonework. Temporary measures were implemented to stabilise the structure, however a permanent solution was required to protect the dam and the wider site.

Together, we have delivered a solution that safeguards this important landmark and protects a unique part of Sheffield’s industrial history for future generations to enjoy.”
Throughout the project, Esh worked closely with stakeholders to minimise disruption and ensure works were carried out in alignment to the requirements associated with working on a Scheduled Monument.
The restoration works addressed critical structural issues, with repairs including the rebuilding and repointing of displaced stone walls using traditional stonemasonry techniques, the installation of clay linings and waterproof membranes to prevent future leakage, and the grouting of voids to strengthen weakened sections of the structure.
A key challenge of the Abbeydale Dam works came in actioning significant structural repairs within a historic and environmentally sensitive site. The works involve repairs and underpinning to the Hamlet forge walls with sections immediately adjacent to historic structures, together with the installation of a new concrete base and the rebuilding and repointing of sections of the dam wall using traditional lime mortar, puddle clay and a Bentonite membrane.
Due to the monument’s protected status, all works were undertaken under the guidance and approval of Historic England and in accordance with permits issued by the Environment Agency. Careful planning and extensive site investigations informed the restoration approach, ensuring the project balanced engineering requirements with the conservation of the site’s heritage significance.
The completion of the project marks a major milestone in the protection of Abbeydale Industrial Hamlet, which is recognised as the most complete example of an integrated water-powered industrial works in existence. The restored dam will once again play its vital role in supporting the historic water management system that powered the site’s industrial operations for centuries.
