Northern Ireland Water has issued a statement saying it has commissioned an independent technical review into contractor fraud allegations previously raised and reported on, following the receipt of new technical information.

The statement says:
“This review is intended to complement and enhance the financial investigation already undertaken. An updated statement will be issued in due course.”
According to a report in the Belfast Telegraph on Saturday 9th August, a businessman who had worked with the utility for 20 years had his contract terminated after “blowing the whistle to allege systemic fraud against taxpayers.”
The news organisation said it was first contacted by the unnamed businessman a year ago. In March 2025 NI Water was asked for a copy of the independent report, but refused to provide the newspaper with a copy.
On 25 February this year the water company announced that an independent forensic team from Deloitte which conducted a detailed investigation following allegations of contractor fraud being raised at NI Water had found no evidence of fraud or wrongdoing by the water company.
A subsequent article in the Belfast Telegraph published on 20 March 2025 exploring the issues in more detail says NI Water was asked for a copy of the independent report, but refused to provide the newspaper with a copy.
The press release published on the company’s website on 25 February 2025 entitled “Independent investigation finds no evidence of NI Water wrongdoing or fraud” appears to have been removed from the website and been replaced with the message “404 Error Page not found! We are sorry, the page you are looking for could not be located.”
