Lead systems integration partner Amey celebrates activation of Tideway Tunnel

Amey is celebrating the full activation of the Thames Tideway Tunnel, London’s new super sewer, marking a major milestone in the city’s infrastructure that will see a cleaner and healthier River Thames.

TIDEWAY TUNNEL - COMPLETION OF FINAL SECTION 1

As the lead systems integrator, Amey has played a critical role in enabling the connection of all 21 sites across the 25km tunnel, ensuring the successful integration of the complex systems that now work in unison to protect the river from sewage pollution.

The milestone underscores Amey’s engineering expertise in managing complex infrastructure projects and reinforces its commitment to sustainable urban development.

With the Thames Tideway tunnel now fully operational, it will be able to intercept, store, and transfer sewage waste away from the River Thames to be treated at Beckton Sewage Treatment Works, greatly reducing the excess overflow and discharge of sewage into the river.

As the core systems integrator, Amey is responsible for delivering process control, communication equipment and software systems that ensure the seamless operation of the tunnel. This includes maintenance and reporting across the entire network, all managed through its Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) system.

Amey’s SCADA solution plays a pivotal role in monitoring and operating the combined network of tunnels and sewage systems that run beneath the River Thames, stretching from Acton in West London to Abbey Mills in the East. The end-to-end systems integration is essential for the tunnel’s ability to manage stormwater flows, optimise operations, and ensure the system’s resilience under future climate challenges.

Alex Gilbert, Managing Director, Consulting, Amey, said:

“We’re incredibly proud to have been the lead systems integrator on a project of this magnitude and national significance. Amey’s contribution in the successful activation of the Thames Tideway Tunnel further highlights our strong commitment to delivering infrastructure projects that not only work for today but also support a more resilient and sustainable future.”

Amey has been the Systems Integration partner on the Thames Tideway Tunnel Project since 2015, working alongside of some of Europe's biggest contractors including Balfour Beatty, BAM, Costain and Ferrovial.

Handover of the completed system is expected to be in 2025. ·
