South West Water starts series of pop-up events for residents in Exmouth

South West Water is starting a series of pop-up events in Exmouth this week to provide updates and engage more with local residents, helping them to understand more about recent challenges in the area and planned investments for the future.

The first session took place yesterday in The Estuary Suite at Ocean in Exmouth on Wednesday 24 April, where South West Water experts were on hand to answer questions and discuss recent and future works in the town.

Due to a series of unpredictable bursts to a section of sewer in December 2023, work has been ongoing to prevent future bursts and to add more resilience to the local network. South West Water has invested £2 million to replace 800 metres of pipe, which was completed earlier this month.

The sewer replacement forms part of a series of improvements the water company is making to its network in Exmouth where South West Water has earmarked £38 million of investment up to March 2025.

The investment includes power and pump upgrades at Maer Road Pumping Station to reduce the use of the storm overflow and expanding the capacity of Maer Lane Treatment Works to reduce spills during periods of heavy rainfall. This will all help to maintain the ‘excellent’ bathing water quality at Exmouth Beach which it has had since 2016, as assessed by the Environment Agency.

Susan Davy, Chief Executive Officer of South West Water said:

“We care about Exmouth and we want the residents to feel informed and confident in the investments we are making in their area. This is why our team will host a series of pop-up sessions in the town to provide opportunities for locals and customers to meet our experts and ask any questions they may have, in person. We know that people in Exmouth are concerned, we have listened and are taking action.”
