Severn Trent Water granted drought permit for Dove Reservoirs

The Environment Agency has granted a drought permit to Severn Trent Water following an application made by the utility under the Water Resources Act 1991 on 27 February 2019.

The drought permit, which will be effective from 8 March 2019 until 31 March 2019, will increase the aggregate quantity of water the Company is entitled to abstract from Foremark Reservoir and Staunton Harold Reservoir in Derbyshire.

The drought permit will increase the aggregate quantity of water that the company can abstract from 73,200,000 cubic metres per year to 77,200,000 cubic metres per year for the period 1 April 2018 to 31 March 2019.

The permit also modifies an abstraction licence which licenses abstraction from the River Dove but will not result in an increase in permitted rates of abstraction from the River Dove.

The effect of the drought permit will allow the company to increase the total combined volume of water that can abstracted from Staunton Harold and Foremark reservoirs.

This will allow Severn Trent to reduce its use of other reservoirs and will be an aid to the refill of the reservoirs that supply the company’s strategic water supply grid.

The powers will thereby help to safeguard public water supplies in the utility’s wider strategic water supply grid. Conditions requiring the firm to release a volume of water from the reservoirs to support downstream watercourses have not been affected by the drought permit.
