United Utilities has published detailed data about its bioresources activities to enable potential market participants to identify opportunities to supply services in the treatment, transport, recycling and disposal of bioresources.
In line with Ofwat guidelines, the company has provided information about water and sewerage company sewage sludge production sites (wastewater treatment works (WwTWs) and sludge treatment facilities (STCs). The regulated water and sewerage companies are required to provide some data on a mandatory, basis with the option of providing any additional information on a voluntary basis.
The aim is to facilitate conversations between companies and third parties to explore market opportunities.
The data covers 40 WwTW sludge production sites for population served greater than 2000, 33 Smaller WwTW (less than 2000 population equivalent served) and 34 sludge treatment centres.
The water company has published detailed information about individual site particulars, sludge production information and sludge quality and the bioresource activities carried out at its larger sites, including:
- The name of the site and the town it relates to
- End product quantity per year
- Estimated or Measured quantity of treated sludge produced
- Estimated or Measured product dry solids data
- Usual operating hours of the site
- Type of site - Thickening centre, Dewatering centre, Treatment centre, or incinerator
- Can the site receive sludge not de-gritted or from sites without screening
- Is the site producing untreated sludge, conventionally treated sludge or enhanced treated sludge
- Is the site compliant and certified under the Biosolids Assurance scheme
United Utilities has also sets out details of existing contracts in place which are being provided by a third party on its own bioresource service.
Information about the scope of service contracted ( transport, treatment, recycling, disposal etc) is included to help market participants understand if there are remaining opportunities beyond the scope of the contract, together with the scale of contracted activity to allow participants to understand the scale activity. Other information includes:
- Month and year the contract started and month and year the contract is due to complete to help market participants understand the timing of contracts already let.
- Term of contract to give market participants an indication when they may be able to compete to provide the contracted services, including duration, extensions and break clauses, but not price.
The water companies are also required to include joint ventures, including those where the company is part of the joint venture as part of contract information to enable third parties to understand the market opportunities that are currently available.
