Irish Water has confirmed that over 950 customers in Co Kerry have been removed from the Environmental Protection Agency’s Remedial Action List following the completion of upgrade work on the water treatment plant in Fenit.
The Remedial Action List (RAL) is updated quarterly by the EPA. The water supply serving 955 people in Fenit is one of three supplies countrywide which have been removed from the RAL. This follows the completion of works to install Ultraviolet (UV) treatment at the plant, putting in place an effective barrier against cryptosporidium.
Irish Water has a prioritised programme of investment for all schemes on the list - the current updated RAL shows a reduction from 90 to 87 schemes. The utility’s aim is to reduce the number of schemes on the RAL to zero by 2021.
A total of 13 water supply schemes in Kerry remain on the RAL, the largest of which is the Lough Guitane Water Supply Scheme. Irish Water is currently developing a new water treatment plant in Lough Guitane to serve the entire mid-Kerry region.

Over 62,000 people depend on the scheme, which feeds nine water supply zones, all of which are currently on the RAL due to lack of adequate treatment facilities. The project is due to be completed by mid-2018
The utility has also announced an investment of €4.5m to upgrade the water treatment plant in Kenmare while also progressing with upgrades to the water supplies of Kilgarvan, Lauragh and Mountain Stage. The water treatment plant at Templenoe has been decommissioned and the supply has been connected to the Kenmare plant.
Speaking about the RAL and the ongoing work in Kerry, Ian O’Mahony, Irish Water’s Operations Lead for the county, said:
“We are pleased to confirm that the Fenit Water Supply Scheme, serving approximately 955 people, has now been removed from the RAL. This follows the installation of UV treatment at the plant which will provide an effective barrier against cryptosporidium and ensure that the supply complies with all drinking water regulations.”
