Retail water sector: Business Stream secures £100m of new business

Water retailer Business Stream has announced it has secured £100 million in new customer contracts since the opening of the English non-domestic water market in April this year.

New contracts include water supply deals with Debenhams, Places for People and Southampton Airport.

The Edinburgh-based company significantly expanded its operation to capture an increased share of the £2.5 billion English market, which has enabled 1.2 million businesses and public bodies in England to choose their water supplier for the first time. As well as acquiring the non-household customer base of Southern Water, it also opened a new office in Worthing.

Business Stream is currently the largest operator in the Scottish non-domestic water market. Its most recent profit before tax was £21.8 million from revenue of £281 million. Headquartered in Edinburgh, it also has offices in Glasgow and Worthing, and employs around 300 staff. The company is a wholly-owned subsidiary of Scottish Water with its own board and independent management team.

Now one of the largest water suppliers in the Anglo-Scottish market, a number of new contract wins has pushed the company over the £100 million mark inside five months of trading.

Jo Dow, Chief Executive of Business Stream, said:

“We've been extremely targeted in our approach, focussing on customers who are looking for a trusted partner to advise and support them on their water and wastewater requirements. We feel that this offers us a point of differentiation from our competitors. We’re pleased with the volume of new business we’ve secured, including £100 million in new customer contracts and an extremely healthy pipeline. Winning places on both of the key public sector frameworks has also been a particular highlight, as it creates many opportunities for us to use our expertise of working with public sector organisations."

Business Stream also recently announced successfully winning places on the two key English public sector frameworks, Laser and the Crown Commercial Service (CCS).
