Severn Trent Water is holding a public meeting tomorrow to set out its plans for a £500,000-plus investment to prevent sewer flooding in Normanton Le Heath, Leicestershire, including construction of a new pumping station.
Programme manager Ian Merrill, explained:
“We’ll be starting work to replace sewer pipes and build the new pumping station in Normanton Le Heath this November, but before that, we really want to meet with local residents to tell them what we’re doing and why, and work with them to keep disruption to a minimum."
“Since the original sewer pipes were installed many years ago, the population in Normanton Le Heath has increased, which now puts extra pressure on our sewer network. In addition, we’re seeing more bouts of heavy rainfall and the sewers are struggling to cope. This has on occasions resulted in local properties suffering from sewer flooding."
As well as replacing the sewers and building the new pumping station, Severn Trent Water’s contract partner, NMCNomenca, is also building a new surface water sewer to take away some of the rainwater that currently flows into the existing sewers. NMCNomenca will be working closely with Leicestershire County Council and Melton Borough Council to improve the highway drainage and local watercourses to cope with increased levels of rain water.
Work on the scheme is expected to take five months to complete.
The water company separately started work this week on a £690,000 scheme to replace nearly five kilometres of new water pipes in Hallaton and Slawston. The work, which is being carried out by contractors Laing O’Rourke, is scheduled to take around 16 weeks to complete.
